Karen Frazier's Author Q & A

Q: Why did you choose to write a book about Wellington?
Karen Frazier: Just a few years ago, Wellington wasn't even on my radar. Then in February of 2009, I was interviewing a local paranormal investigation team for an article in Paranormal Underground. When I asked them what their best piece of evidence was, they described a picture and an EVP that they had captured at this place called Wellington where an avalanche had occurred. From the second I heard about it, I was hooked. It was almost a compulsion I felt - as if something was pulling me to this place where I had never been before.

Q: When did you first go to Wellington?
Karen Frazier: Although I first heard about Wellington in February, I wasn't able to visit until July 11, 2009. Wellington sits pretty high in the mountains, and it is under snow for quite a bit of every year - usually until mid to late June. Then with my kids' schedules, the first trip I could plan was on July 11. I went with my husband and another friend, and we met two groups up at Wellington, NWPIA and another group. It turns out that NWPIA actually investigates Wellington several times a week. Talking to them aroused my curiosity even more, because here was a group of people who seemed to feel the same call to Wellington that I was experiencing.

Q: Did you experience anything the first time you went to Wellington?
Karen Frazier: I don't want to give too much away because it is all in the book, but yes. Before I went to Wellington, I was what I used to term a "ghost agnostic." I wasn't really sure what I believed about ghosts. I'd had some experiences, but nothing definitive. After leaving Wellington the very first time, I believed in ghosts.

Q: Was there one single thing that made you believe?
Karen Frazier: There wasn't one single thing, actually. It was a compilation of odd experiences that started from the moment I set foot on site. It was just one thing after another after another until I really started to think, "Huh - there's something going on here." What was interesting was that the things I experienced at Wellington weren't limited to just one of my senses - seeing or hearing, for instance. Instead, I saw stuff, I heard stuff, I felt stuff, I smelled things. The only thing missing was taste.

Q: How many times have you been to Wellington?
Karen Frazier: From that first visit, I returned a number of times throughout the summer and fall of 2009. Probably too many to count. We live 3-1/2 hours away from Wellington, but that didn't stop me from returning time and time again. As a matter of fact, we were just there on the 100 year anniversary of the avalanche disaster, which was March 1, 2010. That was quite an experience. We had to four wheel drive in, dig the jeeps out of the snow more than once and then hike about a mile in some fairly deep snow to get there. We spent the night, and boy what it was cold. But it was eminently worthwhile. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It was an amazing experience.

Q: Did anything paranormal happen on the 100 year anniversary of the Wellington avalanche disaster?
Karen Frazier: It was actually pretty quiet, but that doesn't surprise me. I'm not so sure spirits recognize dates and see them as significant in the way that we do. We captured a few EVPs on digital recorders, saw some weird things, and one of the people with us felt something a little weird. In other words, it was a typical night at Wellington - only colder.

Q: Why do you think you're so drawn to Wellington?
Karen Frazier: It's a good question! That is one of the things I have been trying to figure out. My husband calls it almost an unnatural compulsion and I think I agree with him. Something keeps calling me back there. Not only that, but the ghosts from Wellington now come to my house to visit me from time to time. I had a reading with a psychic medium a few months back for an article I was writing in the magazine. I'd never had a psychic reading before. I was expecting the typical "dead grandmother" stuff I've seen when people have psychic readings on television. Much to my surprise, instead what I got was a bunch of the spirits from Wellington wanting to talk to me. It became clear that they had been in my house because they described it (through the psychic who has never been here) to a T. That was startling! Through this psychic and few a through others who have interviewed me on radio programs, it has been suggested that I had a past life at Wellington. Did I? I don't know - but it is an interesting theory and one I'd like to explore further.

Q: Will you continue to return to Wellington:
Karen Frazier: Absolutely. I can't imagine not returning to Wellington. It has become part of the fabric of my life. Wellington means a great deal to me. I love the spirits there like I love my family and friends. Not only that, but the site is stunning - it is so gorgeous that I can't think of a better place to spend time. Wellington has such a draw for me in so many ways. One of those ways is that it was at Wellington where I discovered that human beings have souls, something happens after we die, and there's more to us than this tiny blip we experience as our own lifetime. With all of that, I doubt I could stay away if I tried.
